Zero Emissions No Noise

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Today I was browsing through websites looking at innovative electric cars when I came across the Zenn (Zero Emissions No Noise). The car is built right here in Canada and was recently featured on The Rick Mercer report. I've never heard of the company before now and thought that it was a marvelous concept. If only it had a range of 300km and could go 100 km/hour I would definitely consider buying this enterprising little car. It sure would be great if I lived in Vancouver or Toronto, but here on the island it's just not practical.

iPhone Bill Cuts Down Trees

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Well it looks like AT&T is sending out some huge bills along with the iPhone. Check out the video below. I am having a difficult time understanding if she’s just placed a ridiculous amount of calls or perhaps it shows you details on your internet usage as well. In any case, why doesn’t AT&T use e-billing? Or at least have the option to have a treeless (emailed) version instead.

Surely in the digital age most people would be fine with receiving a PDF invoice in their email. I can't believe anybody still sends bills in paper based form these days.

The Web 2.0 List

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

While I was looking for a decent project management suite that had the ability to create tasks, track tickets, and manage users I came across a few websites that have a huge list of “Web 2.0” sites. For those of you who haven’t heard of Web 2.0 yet I’d recommend checking out Wikipedia’s article on it.

Excerpt:

Advocates of the concept suggest that technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds (and other forms of many-to-many publishing), social software, Web APIs, Web standards and online Web services imply a significant change in web usage. Source: Wikipedia

Green web hosting

A really interesting link today to a green web hosting company named AISO (Affordable Internet Services Onine). I found their mission quite unique.

AISO.Net is a reliable and responsible green web hosting company. We have made a strong commitment to help fight pollution and preserving our natural resources. Solar panels run our data center and office, not energy credits. Take a look at the (Solar Panel Photos)

Solar tubes bring in natural light from the outside providing light during the day. AMD Opteron powered servers use sixty percent less energy and generate fifty percent less heat. These are just some of the ways AISO.Net is becoming the world’s most responsible green web hosting company.

BumpTop, a new way to visualize the desktop

Friday, June 29th, 2007

BumpTop is a working prototype from the mind of Anand Agarawala, former computer science grad at University of Toronto.

The concept really excites me! Though I'm not sure yet how much I'd want my entire filesystem organized this way, I would love to be able to organize my desktop in this fashion.

Anand Agarawala presents BumpTop, a fresh user interface that takes the usual desktop metaphor to a glorious, 3D extreme. In this physics-driven universe, important files finally get the weight they deserve via an oddly satisfying resizing feature, and the drudgery of file organization becomes a freewheeling playground full of crumpled documents and clipping-covered “walls.”

Reducing C02 and Saving Energy

C02 Saver

Just finished reading a great article from the New York Times on putting energy hogs in the home on a strict low power diet!

Why should you care? Well for a start you'll save money on your electricity bill, and secondly you will help reduce C02 emissions.

I used a Kill A Watt EZ energy meter (available online for about $25) and began measuring. My PC was continuously drawing 134 watts all night.

The more devices I checked, the worse it got. My TiVo digital video recorder was sucking down about 30 watts when it was not playing or recording a show. A Comcast digital cable set-top box made by Motorola that I tested was drawing about 40 watts. My DVD player was drawing 26 watts while idle, and my audio system — which I rarely turned off — was using 47 watts. This was in addition to the numerous power adapters and chargers, each drawing 1 or 2 watts, not to mention several other devices sipping energy to keep clocks running or to be ready to turn on at the push of a button.

… Tweaking can pay off. Annually, my desktop PC is now using 73 percent less energy — saving me $119 a year and depriving the earth of 1,405 more pounds of CO2.

The writer recommends downloading an awesome little tool called C02 Saver that is a lightweight program that manages your computer’s power usage when it’s idle, saving energy and decreasing the demand on your power utility.

We plan on using it on our PC’s within our office environment. What a great tool!

Review of Coda

Monday, June 11th, 2007

This week we’ve decided to review Coda, a fully furbished text editor built by Panic Software. Our office has recently started using Coda and since Panic offers a free trial we thought we’d download it and try it for 2 weeks. Having been long-time Transmit FTP owners we’ve really appreciated the quality of software that Panic has produced in the past we were certain that this would amount to a killer of a text editor.

Review of Coda, text editor

What caught our eye initially about Coda was it’s feature set. Here are just a few of the features that Coda boasts their product offers:

  • Advanced Site Management
  • Top-Notch Text Editing
  • Visual CSS Editor
  • Live Web Preview
  • Built-in SSH Terminal
  • Comprehensive Reference Material
  • Real-time Collaborative Editing

For all you programmer’s out there with day jobs you do not enjoy, this one is for you! It’s great to listen to even if only for a few laughs.

Making Powerpoint Slides Less Boring

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Taking a browse through LifeHacker today I caught this post on making Powerpoint slides less boring through the use of photographing stickies. Just one more way you can bring a unique style to those important presentations. I thought the idea was great.
